Tomato Sandwiches

Inspired by the hoards of fresh tomatoes gathered from our families' home gardens over the years, I wanted to create a cinemagraph showcasing our families dependency and tradition surrounding tomatoes. Part of my dad's side of the family is Italian, thus making tomatoes a staple for many dishes. Although we use tomatoes in many recipes, we also will eat tomatoes by themself (mostly). Growing up I have many memories walking to my grandfather's garden, bare feet rustling through the soft grass, to reach over the fence to grab cherry tomatoes off the vine.

 

My grandfather taught me many other Italian delicacies such as fresh sliced tomatoes with some cracked pepper or one of my favorites; a tomato sandwich. There is nothing quite like  fresh crusty bread, either from the Italian bakery or made by my Nana's hand, with a nice slathering of mayo and red juicy tomato slices. In the summer there was nothing quite as refreshing. 

 

To create this cinemagraph I used tomatoes my parents and I harvested from our large sprawling garden and put them inside the special melamine bowl we inherited from my grandfather's cottage. The bowl itself is a reminder of cold summer nights spent surrounded by family and the joys of summer cooking and late-night salty snacks.
